Rick Santorum’s running strong as the most far-right candidate for the GOP primary — but the convictions don’t run quite as deep as advertised.

“He is the true conservative when it is convenient in a Republican primary,” Cenk says, “but when he was running for Congress in 1990? Ehh, not so much.”

Not only did Santorum say then that he was “not a Reagan Republican,” he claimed to be moderate on labor issues and support alternative energy research. He also prided himself on being able to “dance around the issue” of abortion without taking a strong stance on it.

“Wow,” Cenk says. “I hate abortion — unless it’s going to win me an election, in which case I have mixed feelings, and I like to dance!”

“God protect us from predators who can do whatever they want to do with us,” Santorum shouted on the floor of the Senate.

Cenk says, “You run that campaign and see how badly you get slaughtered in the general election. The country’s nowhere near as extreme you… This guy thinks he knows what Satan’s up to. He thinks we’re in a war with Beelzebub. The guy’s a lunatic.”

Huffington Post contributor Paul Abrams tells Keith why Wall Street might embrace higher taxes on the wealthy and whether the Occupy movement is reflected in a recent comment by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and a statement from The Wall Street Journal editorial board. “Everybody was talking about what they [Occupy] were doing and then people started talking about what they were for. So I think that they should absolutely continue what they were doing. I take my hats off to them,” says Abrams.

Keith consults Jonathan Turley, “Countdown” contributor and George Washington University law professor, to find out what might happen when the U.S. Supreme Court reconsiders the legality of affirmative action through the case of Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. Turley reflects that the current court is more conservative, observing: “There’s no question that they have the presumed five votes that could send [2003 Supreme Court decision Grutter v. Bollinger] into the ashbin of history. With it could go affirmative action — at least the consideration of race.”

They are 60 percent of college graduates in America, but hold only three percent of the leadership positions in media and only six of the nation’s 50 governorships. Why? Jennifer Granholm talks to actress and filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom about her documentary, Miss Representation, a film that explores the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America.

With Arizona and Michigan primaries less than a week away, GOP candidates are spending in force — especially on negative campaign ads. Aaron Blake of Washington Post’s ‘The Fix’ blog tells Jennifer Granholm why negative ads are everywhere this year. A crowded field of candidates combined with the advent of Super PACs have redefined the campaign trail, prompting a more than $19 million spend on negative ads thus far. “The political game in America is really being decided by these negative ads and that’s why all these dollars go towards them,” Blake tells Granholm.

Unhappy rumblings are spreading around the GOP as election night approaches. We’re taking a closer look at this interesting story from the Current community. Check it out and add your two cents:

Some Republicans Whisper About a Plan B

Submitted by circlesquared

Although, it looks unlikely that another Republican candidate will enter the race, many Republicans have been talking about such a scenario. Politico first reported the existence of a document circulating, however, “no one is hoping that this will come to play,” regarding an open convention.

“If you bring somebody new into the race, that person will lose,” said a senior GOP strategist who admits a bias towards Romney. “The party – especially conservatives – will not respond to somebody who has not gone through the process.”

That being said, it’s clear Rick Santorum’s recent rise in the polls – and what some see as his electability problems – has struck a nerve with Republicans.

“There is something called agenda control,” said one unaffiliated GOP strategist. “Santorum does not have it. Instead of talking about the economy, he’s been going down rabbit holes for the last four or five days.”

Republicans continue to be concerned regarding Santorum’s emphasis on cultural issues and Romney’s angst. The community reacts:

The_Wanderer_Kansas: “Simple point, IF they decide to play a Plan B, you can be assured they will put all of their focus into it’s success.”

Leen61: “Anything is possible with the GOP. Never say never.”

kennymotown: “It’s the funniest GOP I’ve ever seen, serves em right I say!”

fiberbundle: “Choose:
A) Leveraged buyout artist
B) Former Senator obsessed with religion
C) Former Congressman kicked out of House by his own Party because he disrupts workflow and is not a team player
D) Rebel Goldbug
E) None of the above”

The organized efforts to deny that climate change is happening has received attention this past week, thanks to uncovered documents that show who is sponsoring the movement and what their agenda is going forward. Internal reports show that the right-wing think tank, the Heartland Institute, is being funded by the Koch brothers, Microsoft, and many tobacco companies. Most alarming is word that the group is attempting to develop a K-12 schoolhouse “global warming curriculum” that presents climate science as “a major scientific controversy.” The revelations have embarrassed the Institute to the extent it has questioned the veracity of stolen documents. One environmental activist has admitted to posing as someone else to obtain the documents. Now you know how it feels to be illegally hacked, say climate scientists in a letter to the Heartland Institute.

In other environmental news from the past week…

A new U.S. government push toward curbing global warming
The U.S. State Department, led by Hillary Clinton, is tackling an effort to do something about climate change by focusing on “short lived pollutants.” According to a briefing given by an unidentified State Department official last week on background, a focus on reducing methane, black carbon, and hydrofluorocarbons would “have a larger impact than people generally recognize.” These emissions account for one-third of current global warning, the official said, and that by taking “16 major actions” to reduce these short lived pollutants, global warming could be curbed by a half degree Celsius by 2050. Here’s the full text of the speech and the QA conducted with reporters.

Mixed reports about the dangers of air toxins
The Environmental Protection Agency has released a long-awaited report concerning dioxins in the air. According to the agency, the toxic chemicals can be extremely dangerous, but thanks to a 90 percent reduction in dioxin emissions since 1987, they do not pose a “significant health risk.” Good news, but the dangers of other air pollutants still abound. For instance, new research has identified tiny particles known as secondary organic aerosols as a lethal substance that causes heart and lung disease and kills at least 50,000 Americans each year. “If the authors’ analysis is correct, the public is now facing a false sense of security in knowing whether the air they breathe is indeed safe,” said Bill Becker, of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies.

Gas production becomes hot political issue…again
House Republicans have passed a bill that would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, do the same off the coast of the Atlantic and reinvigorate the Keystone XL oil sands pipeline. The vote was mostly on party lines and while it stands absolutely no chance of being signed into law by President Barack Obama, it represents what’s likely to be one of the biggest issues in the presidential election this summer. The GOP hopes to use rising gas prices to suggest the White House isn’t doing enough. Democrats, however, point out that revenues would be modest, environmental damage would be large, and that significant oil shale production would take decades anyhow.

Illustrating the benefits of organic food production
Here’s a fantastic stop-motion animation to help educate people about how organic food production is the answer to feeding the world. The animation is based on Michael Pollan’s “Food Rules.”
